In the field of Learning & Development we are taught to evaluate the impact of our programs at the end of the workshop or a few months later. The feedback is (usually) affirming. But what does Nouwen's insight say about the teacher's pride, need for affirmation, ego? On reflection, most of my most profound learnings have occurred long after the teacher has gone (not usually mortally). When I deliver my Values Workshops at work to new employees I have a sense that the seeds being planted through the exploration of Luke's Good Samaritan passage will come to life in the years to come.Musket Ball Johnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09021343776430244953noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7203490787355457567.post-50398796901073311442013-03-19T14:10:09.669+11:002013-03-19T14:10:09.669+11:00I found your paper quite eye opening and it has gi...I found your paper quite eye opening and it has given me new perspective on what it is to be a person rather than an individual and how i view myself. For many years I too was unaware that the muscle fatigue, incredible tiredness, sleep apnoea, sore toes and more, such as the anxiety attacks and depression I had experienced were related to the polio I had at age 5. We post-polio survivors tend to be type-A personalities, over-achievers and of a kind not to complain but just get on with it. In my case I knew (and can remember well) having had polio but was told by my parents that I could achieve anything I wanted in life if I just put my mind to it. So I played field hockey at school and rowing and generally had a great time. It is only now in later life (at age 69) that I have had to acknowledge
my limitations. But having just returned from a historical tour of Turkey which involved much clambering over the ruins of ancient cities (with help from my daughter) I realize that much is still accessible to us if we just take our time and accept a helping hand. That is why I am going to Canberra on 31st October for the We're Still Here! Campaign to raise awareness for Late Effects of Polio and lobby our politicians for support of polio victims. So much we can do for ourselves, and will continue to do so, but there will come a time when we will need to call on support services. I am hopeful that consideration will be given to our cause. Thanks again for sharing your motivating story. Bruce Livettbrucehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03956451087470851661noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7203490787355457567.post-58284516831246985182012-07-22T04:34:34.476+10:002012-07-22T04:34:34.476+10:00Beautiful, soothing image. That is, we are called to find the meaning for ourselves in those happenings which seemed to be devoid of meaning at the moment they are experienced. The Bible is full of moments where God was encountered within what was, for all intents and purposes, overwhelmning circumstances. Our faith in Jesus as God's Son and our Lord is not only tested but proven in these very same moments.Glenn Loughreyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11806481975198236275noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7203490787355457567.post-53034924460757953342009-02-21T17:46:00.000+11:002009-02-21T17:46:00.000+11:00I too would like to offer my condolances. However, ...I too would like to offer my condolances.

However, let us not forget that all things come under the soverignty of God and that perhaps this financial crisis (and indeed other disasters) happen so that we may fix our eyes unto Jesus - the author and perfector of our faith.

"While I understand the importance of work, income and satisfaction, is there not a small possibility that the value and time we place on these things is actually more than they deserve?" - Redshoes Walking.

You must also remember Red, that for many people, thier work, income and ultimately satisfaction IS their love and family. As difficult as it is for both men and women to deal with their troubles, it's sometimes more frustrating when you watch a close friend or family member suffer and feel helpless to assist them. May the Lord care for your best friend's brother and help the family of the recently passed during this difficult time.

I'm not a bloke, but I do attend St. Jude's and totally agree that it's so important to reevaluate your priorities when tragedy hits. People spend so much time worrying about money (even though given the financial climate this is not surprising) that they forget that there are many ways you can still "live for the moment" without blowing the budget. I often find it's so much better to have a meal at home in order to both save money and enjoy the company of your family as you prepare the meal. It also gives you the opportunity to use the leftover money to help out a needy family so that they too can have fun during the Christmas season and put off their financial worries for a little while.

Merry Christmas, RedShoes Walking. Perhaps your feet will receive a green pair under the tree this year so that the red ones don't get too lonely.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7203490787355457567.post-29441856831772193042008-10-09T11:15:00.000+11:002008-10-09T11:15:00.000+11:00And that's the big problem for most of us, being t...And that's the big problem for most of us, being trapped in a stereotypical image of manhood.

It is important that we discover ways to self care - the space, place and time to rejuvenate, reflect and realign our priorities, values and direction.

While family and soociety is important, so are we and we need to value ourselves sufficiently in order that we care for ourselves. OOften this problem is accentuated by work hours for parents meaning children are up early and home late so their parents can keep the 9-5 working routine plus travel; oftenn the children are involved in a number of extra-curricular and out of school activities; they often have communication tools in their rooms which ensure they get less or interrupted sleep and more.

The approach needs to be wholistic and tailored to the individual needs of children and their families, with more choices for how we do school, work and leisure.

Not easy but worth thinking about.Glenn Loughreyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11806481975198236275noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7203490787355457567.post-56954439087574060322008-10-01T11:47:00.000+10:002008-10-01T11:47:00.000+10:00http://www.smh.com.au/news/health/teenagers-robbed...http://www.smh.com.au/news/health/teenagers-robbed-of-sleep--and-results/2008/09/30/1222651083292.html

The effects of a lack of sleep are now starting to be really felt - even being linked with childhood obesity.
